A whole-school approach to behaviour, safety and learning - improving mental and physical wellbeing

Children's emotional health and wellbeing has a huge impact on their ability to learn.

The evidence for this link between wellbeing and attainment has been well documented by various lead organisations.

At Silverstone CE Primary School; we believe a whole-school approach is vital to improving children’s emotional health and wellbeing, helping to keep them safe, improve behaviour and raise achievement.

To meet these needs, we have chosen to follow the CORAM Life Education SCARF programme. This programme is enhanced by the annual visit of the CORAM Life Education Bus.

Creating a safe learning environment

Within each class; teachers work hard to organise lessons that deal with potentially sensitive subjects by creating a safe, secure learning environment. This helps our children feel confident to share their ideas, values and attitudes without fear of negative feedback from their peers.  This safe learning environment with clear boundaries also helps teachers to manage discussions on sensitive issues with greater confidence.

Relationship Education

From 2020: it will be statutory for schools to deliver Relationships Education in primary schools. They are being encouraged by the Department of Education to deliver Sex Education that ensures that both boys and girls are prepared for the changes adolescence brings and – drawing on knowledge of the human life cycle set out in the National Curriculum for science - how a baby is conceived and born. Health Education, which will also be made statutory from 2020, covers the key facts about puberty and the changing adolescent body.

At Silverstone CE Primary, we have always taught a curriculum, which prepared our children for changes to their bodies and how babies are conceived. These new changes have been welcomed by us and given our staff a better framework and resource bank to teach the curriculum.  Staff choose the appropriate lessons from the resource bank within the CORAM Life Education SCARF programme. The lessons are age appropriate and as with all our PSHE lessons, are taught within a safe learning environment in a sensitive manner.
